And now we wait some more...

Well, after 9000 miles and 44 hours of travel time (we stopped in Europe for the night to break up the trip), we arrived in Delhi last night around midnight local time.  I managed to get us business class seats at the last minute and thank God for that.  The apartment we rented is in Greater Kailash which is ten minutes from the ultrasound facilities, the hospital and Dr Shivani's office - so, very convenient.  We have daily housekeeping and anything we want is a text message away.  Steve is thrilled that we can have a massage therapist here at a moment's notice for about $12 an hour.  Everything from DVD's to fresh meat from the butcher shop - all delivered - the service here is such a treat for so little money.  There is an open air market across the street that has everything from pharmacies to clothing to groceries to Pizza Hut.  So, we are set there.

Now, onto Steve's reaction to Delhi and what you endure for all these treats at such a modest price.  As all of us who have been to India know - that first flirt with reality here is a bitter dose.  He is having that experience today.  While I have been here twice, this is his first trip.  He is simply speechless at the level of poverty and unsanitary conditions - and we are in 'posh' Greater Kailash!  I am somewhat less affected this time - which is disturbing in and of itself.  How quickly we condition ourselves.

All in all, we are comfortable and as the title suggests - now we wait.  We had the wonderful experience today of visiting Dr Shivani and Dr Jolly (the sonologist) at Dr Jolly's office - there we met our (incredibly shy) surrogate for a routine scan.  Having the experience of watching your children on ultrasound, hearing the heartbeats - simply amazing.  I never thought we would make it here in time, but we did - and it looks like with time to spare.  We are 36 weeks 1 day and Dr Shivani says she will not schedule a c-section before 37 weeks 2 days - so we have potentially 8 days of additional waiting.  Both babies are approximately 5.5 lbs (2.5kg) as of today's scan - so, likely we are going to have 6 lb twins!  I don't know of another set of Indian surrogacy twins that have gone to 37 weeks - someone correct me if I am wrong.  This is such great news...nice, big, healthy babies.  We are convinced more now than ever that at least one baby is a boy - have thought so all along, but almost certain of it now.  Just saying...noone disclosed a thing...just a gut feeling.  The only person who knows the sex of the babies is the sonologist, Dr Jolly - Dr Shivani doesn't even know...all against Indian law...I know this is driving several of our friends nuts.

So, that is it for now - stay tuned...

Terry & Steve

Congrats on arriving before your babies! It must have been really neat to be there for the ultrasound. Well done. I hope we are as lucky.
Todd (in Mumbai w SI) went 37 weeks with his twin girls born at the end of June.
Keep the updates coming. Best wishes.

I can't believe you're so close now! It seems like just yesterday that this pregnancy started for you! I will anxiously waiting for news here!

We had the opportunity to be in on a 3D ultrasound of our daughters at about 16-17 weeks and that was an amazingly moving experience. We also thought we had some "clues" of gender from that ultrasound and also one of the 3Ds of our first twins (boys). My "guesses" turned out correct in both cases.

Our daughters who were born ~ 2 months ago were delivered at exactly 37 weeks. It is very possible our surrogate could have gone even longer as there was no complication developing (it was an incredibly uneventful twin pregnancy). As you know, the growth of twins slows relative to singletons after 32-33 weeks and at some point there is not much to be gained keeping them in longer (especially as the opposing risks start to go up). Their weights were 6lb3oz (2.81 kg) and 5lb15oz (2.68 kg), very close to where yours will likely be.

Our sons born at the end of January made it to 35 weeks, but could possibly have been longer (planned delivery was at 36 weeks or later). Pre-term labor started the night before their birth and our surrogate didn't think it was too serious, so didn't alert the doctors (she was in the hospital and had had several false starts in the weeks before). Needless to say, when she was examined in the morning, it was apparent there was no stopping things at that point so the delivery occurred a few hours later. Their weights were 6lb6oz (2.9 kg) and 5lb8oz (2.5 kg).

It's wonderful to hear that you are at the point of just waiting for them to be born. I remember reading your blog when we were expecting our twins and hoping that your next attempt would be a success. I was in Delhi for 50 days, and found it to be very wearing-it still kind of haunts me in some ways. You mentioned not knowing of any twins going past 37 weeks- well, ours did, and who knows how much longer they might have, except that our doctor did a C-section at 38 weeks. The babies were really different weights-one weighed 7 and a half pounds and the other one was 5 lbs. and 2 oz.

We had Rotunda twins back in 08 that went to 38 weeks. But our doctors explained back then that allowing twins to go past 37 weeks is very risky. As one poster commented earlier the extra weight gain does not justify the risk of catastrophic delivery or harm to the surrogate mother. I know of 3 other cases of twins, 2 went to 37 weeks, one went to 38 as well. The other that went to 38 weeks had complications during the c-section and the surrogate mother was hospitalized for over two months post-delivery. Please be considerate of the birth mother as you decide a delivery date.
Hoping the best for your family,
Trudy

Hope you guys are ready...cause they're coming one way or another!

Time has flown by so quickly! Once they are born, you're gonna have your hands full. So get us as many photos on the blog as possible before you become too busy and to tired to type...much less snap a photo!

Good luck guys!

Fantastic! I'm glad they've set up shop in there for the duration. That's great news, especially for twins. Take a few naps so that you're well rested when they arrive. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I had no idea you'd have to stay in India this long. I'm sure it's been fabulous but also equally good to have everybody home safe and sound!
